CEO Reflections

Rooted in… Team

By Gretchen Rosenberg, President & CEO of Kentwood Real Estate

It takes a tremendous amount of teamwork to run a company comprised of 240 of the top-producing real estate brokers in the U.S. and a top-notch support staff to help them reach their goals.

When I was a young agent, I had little idea what I was doing. I only knew I wanted to help people, I loved architecture and had a modicum of a mind for business. I also knew I had to, “fake it til I made it.” I was a single mom; I had no choice.

My strategy was to ask for help. There were always older brokers on the other side of a transaction who loved to tell me how many years in the business they had. “I’ve been doing this for 25 years!” They’d say when I was advocating for my client and they didn’t appreciate my dogged stance.

One thing I noticed over and over was that Kentwood brokers rarely pulled that. (I wasn’t at Kentwood for my first 2 ½ years in the business.) They were consummate professionals. They offered to coach me and looked at a transaction as an opportunity to advocate for their client while also recognizing that the ultimate goal of everyone was a smooth transaction that resulted in a closing.

Many Kentwood brokers became unofficial mentors, coaches, and a part of my team. Once I joined the Kentwood Real Estate team for good, I never looked back. There’s never been another place I’ve wanted to make my work home. Never another team I’ve felt could match the passion and purpose we have at our company.

Our group of Metro Denver and Northern Colorado brokers, of managers and department heads, of support staff and their families, have something special going on. We believe in community and that we accomplish more together. We believe that deep roots matter and we always want to inspire people to imagine the next steps in their life journey.

You won’t go wrong being a part of our team or a member of our client community. We look forward to welcoming you – to the team!

They have amazing Mexican food!

What Was Your First Job?

I worked at a baseball field concession stand.

Hobbies:

Hanging out with my husband and 2 kids, hiking, yoga, and anything outside.

Describe Yourself In 5 Words:

Honest, hard working, dedicated, personable, and family focused.

Favorite Colorado Past-time:

I love Hiking!

Favorite Place to Grab a Drink:

Human Bean Nutty Blizzard. I’m there enough that one of the baristas calls my version of this drink “The Sarah”. I must drink a lot of coffee!

One Unusual Thing About You:

I am sure I have many unusual things about me😊 but I cant pinpoint a fun one.

In What Ways Are You Involved in Your Community?

I am very involved with our local schools. I volunteer at them regularly, as well as sponsor and help organize school fundraising events.  I am also involved with WomensGive Larimer County, which is a program to help single mothers get a college education to help provide for their children.

Who Inspires You?

A lot of people inspire me, so it’s hard to pick just one. Anyone who keeps growing and innovating themselves is a great inspiration for me.

My husband is a huge inspiration and inspires me every day. He is hardworking but also family focused, and thoughtful.  He always asks the right questions to people about their lives and seeing what is going on that is important to them, even if he is super busy.  He always the kids and I first which allows me to go through busy times and not worry.

What Is Your Proudest Accomplishment and Why?

Having my children. I have always been very active, and career driven. So when I had my children, I loved seeing a different side of me open up and truly enjoy loving them in a way I hadn’t experienced before.

How Do You Define Success?

A work/life balance. When I feel the most successful is when I can have great family time while also helping my clients find their perfect home or sell their home to move on to their next adventure. The balance keeps me feeling happy and successful

What Career Path Would You Have Chosen If You Didn’t Become a Real Estate Broker?

I love real estate but also do have a past career/life that I still enjoy. I own a local salon and spa in Fort Collins (Orchidee Salon & Spa) and still enjoy seeing it thrive. I have amazing managers that run it for me so I can fully focus on my real estate career, but if I wasn’t in real estate, I would still have that as my focus and passion.

If You Could Master Any Skill That You Don’t Currently Have, What Would It Be and Why?

I just decided to learn tennis.  I have never played before and love the idea of taking on something fun yet hard to master. It’s been a long time since I have learned a new activity/sport and I am looking forward to having some fun.

What Is the Most Adventurous Thing You’ve Ever Done?

Starting my own business. From the conception to the big financial risk of taking the leap has been a huge adventure. Any business owner knows it’s a big leap and a great reward.

If You Could Have Dinner with Anyone, Who Would It Be and Why?

Anna Wintour. She quickly navigated to the top of the fashion and editing world and eventually changed the look and focus of Vogue. I would love to pick her brain about how she achieved her success and what life looks like outside of her career.

What Is Your Favorite Family Tradition?

I love Christmas. I love everything about it but especially family traditions from my past, as well as creating new ones with my family. We try to have a true “Colorado” Christmas by going up to a cabin or home in the mountains (usually Devils Thumb Ranch) so you get the snow and the family time without all the interruptions. Sometimes we do this before or after Christmas so we make sure to also see our extended family on the actual day, but this is our special time just me, my husband, and our kids. Christmas songs, cooking together as a family, decorating our tree (I am a huge fan of decorating the tree together and however the kiddos want it, so it may not be pretty but its fun!), and we have even done sleigh rides. Truly the full holiday experience!

What’s the Best Concert You’ve Ever Been To? What Made It So Special?

I love any outdoor concert, especially Red Rocks. I think you get such a great feeling when you are at Red Rocks hearing music and enjoying the beauty of Colorado at the same time.

If You Could Live in A Book, TV Show, Or Movie What Would It Be and Why?

Outlander is my favorite book series so I would have to choose that. They have now made a TV series out of it and I would be fine with that as well, but of course the book is always better! The story is based on a strong woman who pushes and breaks boundaries and stereotypes when she goes back in time. How could you not love going back to another time to experience life a different, more simple way. And I mean who doesn’t love Scotland!

Hometown:

I moved to Denver when I was 8 years old from Los Angeles. I like to say I’m 90% Native.

What Is One Special Thing About the Place You Grew Up?

It sounds cliché’ but the outdoors. I have literally skied and golfed in the same day.  Where else can you do that?

What Was Your First Job?

Kentucky Fried Chicken at age 14, which they now so healthily refer to as KFC. I also sold Girl Scout cookies and babysat for the neighborhood.

Hobbies:

Golf, Peloton, biking, biking, concerts, live music, TRAVEL, live theater.

Describe Yourself In 5 Words:

Innovative, Creative, Determined, FUN, And Compassionate.

Favorite Colorado Past-time:

Mountain Golf, the balls go so much further!

Favorite Place to Grab a Drink:

Anywhere there is good people watching! I love the bar at Izakya Den.

One Unusual Thing About You:

I am in an Adult Rock Choir and I have sung at Red Rocks! Oh, and I am getting married to the man of my dreams on June 15th. And your all invited!

In What Ways Are You Involved in Your Community?

I am a volunteer at Florence Crittenton Services of Colorado, a Denver nonprofit empowering teen mothers and their children to be productive members of the community. I get to hold babies while these amazing women get an education.

Who Inspires You?

Brave people. People who are vulnerable and still tell their truth.

What Is Your Proudest Accomplishment and Why?

Well that, of course, would have to be my son, which I am sure most people say, and they should. Raising a child in this world can be challenging. I have one son. He and I have been a team for a very long time. He went to the Denver School of Arts and then on to Juilliard School in NYC. He currently lives in Brooklyn with his husband and they are living their dreams in TV, movies, and photography. He is also, and most importantly, a good human. That makes me very proud.

How Do You Define Success?

I think success is very personal. I come from a very hard-working family. My father was a tailor for the airlines and my mom was our school nurse, so with 5 kids, money was tight. But they put us through the best schools and we were in every sport possible. We never went without. Our parents were our coaches and our leaders. They spent late nights working on pine wood derby cars and helping with homework. They taught us to stand on our own two feet, push yourself and take care of others. I think I have accomplished that.

What Career Path Would You Have Chosen If You Didn’t Become a Real Estate Broker?

A Psychiatrist or Psychologist…or a Rock-n-Roll star!

If You Could Master Any Skill That You Don’t Currently Have, What Would It Be and Why?

Playing the guitar or piano. Or I would learn to speak French or Spanish.  I guess I have a few.

What Is the Most Adventurous Thing You’ve Ever Done?

Traveled to Europe by myself. It was the most liberating and exciting thing ever!

If You Could Have Dinner with Anyone, Who Would It Be and Why?

Cheryl Strayed, the author of Wild. She’s a bad ass regardless of her losses and can put everything into words that I struggle with. Ruth Bader Ginsberg – no explanation needed. And my best friend, Brenda, who passed away suddenly 3 years ago. She made everything better.

What Is Your Favorite Family Tradition?

Pretty simple. Chinese food and lots of Christmas Movies on Christmas Eve. Love Actually, Family Stone, Christmas Vacation, etc…with my family dressed in their “warm and fuzzy’s” (Pajamas).

What’s the Best Concert You’ve Ever Been To? What Made It So Special?

Well it’s not really a concert, but when your son is on Broadway and your front and center watching him up there living his dreams – well that is something that lives with you forever.

If You Could Live in A Book, TV Show, Or Movie What Would It Be and Why?

Ohhhh this is a great question! I love so many books, TV shows, and movies! But I think I would have to say the Wizard of Oz.  It’s an adventurous, groundbreaking, and magical. But mostly because in the end Dorothy realizes what matters most is home and loved ones.

What Is One Special Thing About the Place You Grew Up?

There are so many, but I would say just the simplicity of a small town.

What Was Your First Job?

Working at a little sandwich shop called June’s Deli. I still visit her when I’m home.

Who Inspires You?

A good friend and past colleague of mine, Courtney O’Neill. She is such a free spirit and follows her heart no matter how hard it is. She’s not afraid of the road less traveled. She’s one of the kindest, most down to earth people I know.

What Is Your Proudest Accomplishment and Why?

My kids. They are such loving, kind, smart people. They make the world a better place and give me hope for the future.

How Do You Define Success?

Happiness. Money and status don’t mean anything without stopping to enjoy life.

Marketing. It is still a huge part of what I do in real estate and what got me here.

If You Could Master Any Skill That You Don’t Currently Have, What Would It Be and Why?

Speaking another language. I spent time growing up in Germany where all the other kids spoke multiple languages from a young age. I just think it’s such a versatile skill and allows you to communicate and understand more of the world.

What Is the Most Adventurous Thing You’ve Ever Done?

I’m not a very adventurous person…I would probably say in college when I used to do spontaneous road trips in the middle of the night. My mom used to get the midnight call of, “Hey Mom, just to let you know we’re headed to Vegas (or wherever it was). Call you when we get there!”

What Is Your Favorite Family Tradition?

Mornings at our family cabin in the Sierras. The cabin has no electricity and is heated by wood stoves. My Grandpa would get up early and start breakfast. The kitchen stove pipe ran through the loft where my sister and I slept.  We would carefully touch the pipe in the morning without getting out of our sleeping bags to see how hot it was to determine if it was time to get up. My Grandpa would make “hotcakes” and hot chocolate mixed with coffee for us. Still my favorite place in the world.

What Is One Special Thing About Where You Grew Up?

I love Denver, which is why I’ve never left. I recently bought a new home two blocks away from my elementary school and blocks away from my office. There is just something so special to me about living and working in the same neighborhood that shaped me as a child.

What Was You First Job?

Working for my Dad at his law office helping to clean up files, making copies, and shredding old files.

Hobbies:

Travel! I’m a happy camper if I can get out of town a few times a year. I love movies and jump at the chance to see blockbuster or art house movies.

Describe Yourself In 5 Words:

Outgoing, passionate, loyal, funny, and stylish.

Favorite Colorado Past-time:

Heading to the mountains to enjoy the crisp mountain air. I head to Vail whenever I get the chance – it’s been my favorite mountain town since I was young.

Favorite Place to Grab a Drink:

Hillstone. I love the aesthetic and when the band is there in the evening, it reminds me of being with my grandparents who I was very close with.

One Unusual Thing About You:

I love spoilers! When I start to read a book and get to know the characters, I read ahead to the last few pages. If the book has an interesting ending, I keep reading because I want to know how the characters get to the end point. If I don’t like the ending, or don’t connect with the characters I won’t finish the book. I know it’s crazy, but it’s a weird quirk.

In What Ways Are You Involved in Your Community?

Over the last few years, I’ve become really involved with the Denver Metro Association of Realtors serving as a Director of the Board and within the year moving into the role of a National Association of Realtors Director. I also worked with a small group of real estate agents researching and planning the roll-out for electronic lockboxes to better protect and serve the public as well as our clients. I am a committed member of the Realtor community and have found it incredibly fulfilling.

I also have a blog, https://lifestyledenver.com/ that covers all things Denver which has been a fantastic way to get to know my local community more.

Who Inspires You?

My parents inspire me all the time. My Mom had a long successful career and taught me the importance of having a career that you love. My Dad owns his own law firm and has been a great resource for advice and support.

What Is Your Proudest Accomplishment and Why?

My proudest accomplishment to date is my career. I’ve created an amazing base of clients who I am so grateful for! I’ve been in the business for 13 years and have loved every moment.

How Do You Define Success?

Success is living the life you have worked for and enjoy what you do on a day to day basis. I’m eternally thankful for my success.

What Career Path Would You Have Chosen If You Didn’t Become a Real Estate Broker?

If I wasn’t in real estate I think I would enjoy being an interior designer. I enjoy helping my clients stage their homes for sale and provide suggestions and recommendation. Additionally, I have loved putting my new home together piece by piece.

If You Could Master Any Skill That You Don’t Currently Have, What Would It Be and Why?

If only I could master the skill of mindreading, it would make life so much easier. But, if that’s not feasible then I would go with fly fishing. I’ve been turned onto the sport over the last few years and would love to know what I’m doing.

What Is the Most Adventurous Thing You’ve Ever Done?

A few years ago, I took on the challenge of saying yes to anything that scared me or that I would normally say “No” to. That took me on a series of adventures, but the most adventurous was rappelling off a 24-story building for the Cancer League of Colorado.

If You Could Have Dinner with Anyone, Who Would It Be and Why?

I’m going to break the rule here and say I would love to have dinner with Chelsea Handler, Mindy Kailing, Reese Witherspoon, and Victoria Beckham. Mostly because they are all hilarious women, who are also passionate and have created inspirational careers. They’re strong, independent women and I would like to say I see a bit of myself in them.

What Is Your Favorite Family Tradition?

Over the last few years my family has gone to Taos for Christmas. This has become my favorite tradition because it’s a great time of year to slow down, go on vacation, and connect with my family. I’m spoiled because my family all lives close by, but life gets busy and it’s nice to spend the week together. I’m especially looking forward to this year as it will be the first time my new puppies – Marcuccio & Emma will be joining us.

What’s the Best Concert You’ve Ever Been To? What Made It So Special?

Oh, I can’t choose just one! The first would be Dave Mathew’s Band in an acoustic show with Tim Reynolds at Macky Auditorium on the CU campus, the year before I started my freshman year as a Buff. The second was Ed Sheeran at Red Rocks the same day I got back from vacation in England.

If You Could Live in A Book, TV Show, Or Movie What Would It Be and Why?

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I studied the book in college for a semester and read it in-depth three times during that time and absolutely love it. I also named one of my new puppies Emma as I also love that book by Ms. Austen.

What Career Path Would You Have Chosen If You Didn’t Become a Real Estate Broker?

Oil and gas was my career choice out of college until I realized it was merely a stepping stone and learning tool for my discovered career passion: real estate.

If You Could Master Any Skill That You Don’t Currently Have, What Would It Be and Why?

To master the cruelest of all temptresses – Golf! Right now, I can have an awesome real estate career and a lousy golf game, OR I can have a lousy real estate career and a very mediocre golf game.  I get to choose!

What Is the Most Adventurous Thing You’ve Ever Done?

White-water rafting for five days from Moab, UT into Lake Powell with my Little Brother of the Big Brothers organization. The Colorado River was at full flood stage. Later we learned there were fatalities that week in other groups. Several times I was convinced we were going to lose members of our group with these little boys, rafts flipping over, large drops over rocks, rapids, etc.  We were on the edge of a bad disaster with no way out but to keep going forward.

If You Could Have Dinner with Anyone, Who Would It Be and Why?

Jesus Christ, the most positive influential person in history with answers to my questions.

What Is Your Favorite Family Tradition?

Like many others, it is getting together as an extended family for the holidays. The fond memories of seeing the nieces and nephews, watching them grow and mature, hearing the laughter and conversations as everyone catches up with each other, smelling the tempting aromas of delicious meals. These memories cannot be replaced and are treasured forever.

What’s the Best Concert You’ve Ever Been To? What Made It So Special?

The Moody Blues. I always wanted to see one of my favorite rock bands. I took my daughter who smelled pot for the first time. I had to explain that one on the fly. The other concert would be seeing Bob Hope on one of his last tours before he passed away. He will be remembered and missed for so many great things.

Ben Hur, 1959.  This movie encompasses the Roman Empire at its height, persecution of the Jews, beginning of the Christian faith, miracles, answers to some of the questions of life, etc. Much of western civilization started with ideas originating here.

My monthly drive to Aspen and listening to great music along the way. Whether taking Independence Pass or Glenwood Canyon, the ride always clears my head and makes me grateful I live in our beautiful State of Colorado.

Favorite Place to Grab a Drink:

If I’m in Cherry Creek, Quality Italian at the Halcyon Hotel. The Palm if I am Downtown. And Ajax Tavern if I’m in Aspen.

In What Ways Are You Involved in Your Community?

I have been volunteering for over 30 years with many charities in town including being on boards, chairing events, and attending fundraisers. I recently received the “Volunteer of the Year Award” for Denver Health.

Who Inspires You?

My father was always my mentor and after he passed away I have been inspired by my 97-year-old cousin, who is smart as a whip and always helps me with my business and life issues.

What Is Your Proudest Accomplishment and Why?

Raising my 2 sons by myself, not an easy task while working full time.

How Do You Define Success?

What my favorite fortune cookie once said, “Success with pleasure.” But, I also consider raising two smart, successful loving sons to be one of my greatest achievements. I am grateful to have a beautiful, warm home for my family, friends, and clients to always come home to and visit.

What Career Path Would You Have Chosen If You Didn’t Become a Real Estate Broker?

I was in the wholesale and retail clothing business before I was a Broker and have fond memories of those years and my two retail stores, called JJ Trappings, that were Colorado legends before they closed.

If You Could Master Any Skill That You Don’t Currently Have, What Would It Be and Why?

To become a black diamond skier, so I can keep up with my friends and sons.

What Is the Most Adventurous Thing You’ve Ever Done?

I went to camp in Maine when I was 13 years old wearing an 8lb steel and leather brace for my Scoliosis, and rode horses with it on.

If You Could Have Dinner with Anyone, Who Would It Be and Why?

I would have dinner with my father. That way I could have it videotaped for permanent record of all his wonderful stories, and our family history…my one regret.

What’s the Best Concert You’ve Ever Been To? What Made It So Special?

Too many to even to mention! We are a BIG music family and our favorite family tradition is going to concerts together. Starting as a child in Cleveland, my father took me to many concerts: Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, and Bobby Short at the Carlyle in NY are memorable. My first date was to see Bob Dylan and my kids can’t believe I saw The Doors live in concert there too. Then my many years of shows at Red Rocks (before my sons were born and then with them) to see CSNY, Sting, and the London Philharmonic, my two favorites. Our summers are always spent at Jazz Aspen seeing too many musicians to mention.

But since my oldest son is a musician I’ve always enjoyed hearing him perform, especially his first CD he wrote and produced in Denver. My MOST memorable concert I will never forget, is seeing him perform at the Key Club in Hollywood, with my 85-year-old Mother, his grandmother, and many friends and relatives in the house.

If You Could Live in A Book, TV Show, Or Movie What Would It Be and Why?

I would be the attorney and ex-cop Stone Barrington, in Stewart Woods’s novels, as he travels the world flying his own plane, has beautiful homes everywhere, stays in the best hotels, eats in the best restaurants, and has fabulous adventures.
